What is Spam?

Never Do Spam

Paid Links

Paid links may influence search result in a way that may lower their utility and diversity.
Google sells paid links directly in the search results. Over the years, Google has tweaked the ad background color to make it nearly impossible to see on some screens. In germany they advertised the fact that searchers couldn't distinguish the difference between AdWords and organic search results.

Paid Blog Posts

Bloggers promoting K-Mart were torched for using paid blog posts. A Matt Cutts blog post associated the situation with promoting bogus solutions to serious problems like brain cancer.
Google Japan used paid blog post. Google has run additional paid posts since then. They did not use rel nofollow to prevent their own paid posts from impacting search engines.

Doorway Pages

Avoid doorway pages. Thin content is spam.
Google AdSense funded eHow and the other content farms.
Google inserts thin content pages, i.e. products search and Places pages, directly in the search results. While looking for telescopes they may suggest you want a local psychic reading.

Duplicated Content

Recycled duplicated content is spam. Google has a algorithms to detect and demote duplicate content.
Google ranks thsir scraped book content in the search results even thought they haven't received legal permission.

SERP Diversity

Searchers hate search results with loers diversity.
Google rins extended AdWords ads and organic listing on brande keywords. Search for "Macy's" and you are below the fold before you get past the official AdWords ad, organic listing and Google Plus page.

Content Farms, profitable, online business models where search engines are not getting a cut of the action, particularly if they are run by business too small to afford lawyers and lobbysts to compete againts those employed by powerful search companies.

Content farms that offer thin low value content are spam.
Google AdSence is what funded the content farm business model. Google still funds the model today.

Cloaking

Cloaking is bad. Some websites get banned for a significant period or time for cloaking. Even BMW was banned for it.
Google is testing a new survey ad unit that forces you to complete a survey to see content.

Ah, so spam is highly scalable, profitable, online business models where search engines  are not getting  a cut  of the  action, particularly if they are run by business too small to afford lawyers and lobbyists to compete againts those employed by the powerful search companies.
