7 Reasons You Aren’t Getting Any New Ideas

Anger Kills Creativity

You might not be making movies, but you are as in need of new ideas as Hollywood. This is why you aren’t coming up with anything truly new:

You’re Too Stubborn. You hold your ground, you don’t back down, you don’t give an inch, you don’t change, and you take pride in your stick-to-it attitude towards everything. It’s been good for you when it comes to staying the course and focusing on the goal. But it’s also hurt your ability to look at yourself and what you’re doing critically.

You’re Too Angry. You mistake passion for anger, and it’s killing your ability to even have a decent discussion with others who think differently than you. Anger is great for creating derivative ideas, those things you feel compelled and passionate to create as a response to something. This has its place, but anger is seldom the soil that new ideas grow in. Anger is more comfortable in well-worn ruts.

You’re Not Reading Enough. If you’re not reading, you’re effectively closing part of your mind. Ideas that come from things you’ve read probably seem like derivatives, and many are, but reading also has the ability to tip your mind off of the rails you’ve built and get you headed down a new path on your own. Of course, what you read has an effect, too. Choose wisely.

You’re Not Curious. Maybe you read a lot, but only books you know you’ll agree with. You don’t try new things, allow for unexpected experiences – everything you expose yourself to is according to your already set interests. There’s value in knowing what to limit yourself to, in regards to exposure to what’s harmful. But there’s also value in trying something just a bit out of your comfort zone. When we’re uncomfortable, our minds work overtime to make sense of things in a way we understand, and new ideas happen quickly during that time.

You’re Moving Too Fast. Everything is whizzing by you so quickly that you don’t see hardly any of the small details and subtleties at all. Slow down. The big picture isn’t the only thing to be concerned about. There are new ideas just waiting to be discovered in the individual brushstrokes, too.

You Don’t Want New Ideas. The care and feeding of new ideas is a lot of work. New ideas are scary. You have to take them out into the light of day, which is terrifying. You have to constantly decide if they are valid. You have to make them happen, and expose them to critical outside opinion. It’s easier to just rehash proven, old ideas. Maybe you don’t want to be bothered with the courage and work new ideas require.

You Don’t Pay Attention. It seems like ideas hit you randomly, when you least expect them to. But, if you were to pay attention, you might notice that whenever you go for a walk (for example), you tend to get new ideas. In that case, take more walks. Pay attention to when and how new ideas come to you, and recreate that regularly.

New ideas are fragile. They are new, and don’t have any history to support any reason they should exist. Any of the things on this list can effectively squelch new ideas from developing, or from lasting beyond a moment in your mind.
