Don't tweet every five minutes, it is completely counter productive, remember that each new tweet replaces your previous tweet, this reduce your tweets actual reach.

Hashtags

The hashtag turn certain key words into tags by adding the hashtag #trees, for example, you increase the chances to your tweets being seen by people who are interested in trees services and care. Don't use multiple hashtags in one tweet because is considered spam, just use it wisely.

If you want use twitter to find out what's going on with your competitors it's free and you don't have to follow them as a Twitter user.

Trend Topics

Keep track of trending topics, use them at your favor, and if they are relevant to your business, just join the conversation by adding relevant tweets.
